Derry Girls Creator Lisa McGee Sets New Netflix Comedy in the World of Competitive Irish Dance
Netflix announced Jig, a six-part mockumentary set in what the streaming service describes as the “high-stakes world of competitive Irish dancing,” as part of its new UK programming slate unveiled at the Edinburgh TV Festival.
The story will follow best friends Cara and Fletcher, dancers from the struggling Sweeney School of Dance in Derry. Their biggest competition comes from a very different kind of school in Florida — a polished, sponsored and seemingly unbeatable operation that has become their sworn rival.
Both teams have one goal: victory at the World Championships.
The transatlantic premise will take the series from Derry to Florida, bringing two very different sides of competitive Irish Dance together as the dancers, teachers and schools make their way toward the sport’s biggest stage.
McGee, who created the award-winning Channel 4 comedy Derry Girls, will write and executive produce the series. She will be joined as an executive producer by Liz Lewin, Caroline Leddy and Suzanne Mackie. Jig has been commissioned for Netflix from Orchid Pictures.
The new comedy follows McGee’s first Netflix series, How to Get to Heaven from Belfast, which was released earlier in 2026.
Filming for Jig is scheduled to take place in the North of Ireland in 2027. Casting details and a Netflix release date have not yet been announced.
The title may already be familiar to Irish Dance audiences. Jig was also the name of Sue Bourne’s 2011 feature documentary, which followed dancers competing at the 2010 World Irish Dancing Championships in Glasgow. The newly announced Netflix production is a fictional comedy series and is not described as connected to that earlier film.
